  • Legal Highs / Research Chemicals

    There are generally two groups of Legal Highs. Natural / organic compounds and man-made / synthetic ones. Some legal highs can have similar effects to stimulant or depressant drugs that are illegal. Back to all training on drugs »

    Over the last few years the selling of legal highs has become big business. A good example of this is NRG1 (made to replace Mephedrone) which has become illegal and instantly replaced by NRG2.     The key to working with these legal highs is knowledge. Understanding of the chemical make up and how it works neurologically are essential to being able to give good advice to users and also produce effective harm reduction information. Check ACMD Cathinones »

    Although a certain amount of information can be developed quickly around legal highs, longer term effects on neurology and addictiveness are often harder to establish.

  • Course Description

    A one day course.. This course focuses on the different types of research chemicals, prevalence, health and interventions. The course covers;

    • History of legal highs.
    • Current world and UK situation.
    • Current policy / research documents.
    • Types of legal highs including mephedrone.
    • How they work.
    • Health and Psychiatric implications.
    • Treatment.
  • Aims & Objectives

    The aims and objectives of the course are to;

    • Increase knowledge and awareness of the issues relating to legal high use.
    • Increase knowledge of how legal highs are used and the effects upon individual’s physiology and neurology.
    • Understand the possible affects on health.
    • Increase confidence in working with this client group.
    • Increase competence in working with this client group.

    Day One:

    • AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists.
    • HSC233 Relate to, and interact with, individuals.
    • HSC3111 Promote the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of individuals.
    • AB2 Support individuals who are substance users.
    • HSC33 Develop your own knowledge and practice.
    • AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects.
